What’s this piece all about?
Ryan’s Destiny is about a black hippie who refused to embrace the status quo. I painted this around the same time that I painted JimiJames. It is important for me to represent the uncommon in my art. History of the counterculture hippie movement of the 60s often only reflects one race. Black people have long been free thinkers and culture changers. Ryan’s Destiny is just that. The background of plants is indicative of his love of nature. The arrows pointing up reference his connection to the divine.
