What’s this piece all about?
Meredith is a jaded socialite and success story. Used to being “the first black woman” in the room, she’s become unimpressed. She is still committed to maintaining her social currency despite being tired. Meredith represents the endless cycles black women must succumb to avoid being labeled “the angry black woman”, “irrelevant” or “ghetto”. The ever-moving goalposts of equity and well-deserved rest never seem to manifest for black women. Bound to work tirelessly to maintain their seat at the table, even if that table is their own.
